Post-Surgery Care Instructions for Implant Surgery

Following your implant surgery, it’s crucial to adhere to these guidelines for proper home care. If you experience any unusual symptoms, be sure to contact your doctor promptly. Keep in mind that if you had IV sedation during the procedure, you may still be under the influence of medication, so refrain from driving, consuming alcohol, signing legal documents, or making significant decisions for the next 24 hours.

Essential Steps for Successful Recovery After Implant Surgery

Protecting the Surgical Site

  • Expect bleeding, which is normal and may persist for several hours.
  • Apply gentle pressure to your cheeks, jaws, and chin with cool packs.
  • If you have a removable denture, place gauze in the molar region and bite down.
  • Once bleeding stops, remove the gauze.
  • Maintain a semi-reclined position, with your head elevated above your heart unless feeling faint.
  • Avoid spitting, bending over, using a straw, or rinsing for 24 hours.
  • Refrain from strenuous physical activity or smoking for 10 days.
  • If prescribed, continue with oral mouth rinse for 2 weeks.

Rinsing Protocol

  • Day 1: Avoid rinsing or brushing your teeth and do not spit.
  • Days 2 and 3: Brush your teeth gently twice a day. If you have a non-fixed denture, remove it for cleaning.
  • Begin rinsing with warm salt water solution after meals.
  • Follow any prescribed rinsing solutions.
  • From day 4 until day 42, rinse with a bit more force but avoid brushing the gums or surgical site.

Dental Care

  • Start brushing your teeth 2 to 3 times a day from day 2, being cautious around the incisions.
  • No temporary prosthesis should be placed on the implant site for at least 3 weeks, unless advised otherwise.
  • Wait until 12 weeks after surgery to use a Waterpik®.

Swelling, Fever, and Pain Management

  • Apply a cool pack to your face for at least 48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience extreme swelling or a fever above 101.5°F.
  • Take prescribed pain medication as directed, preferably after eating to minimize nausea.
  • Do not drive while using narcotic pain medications.

Avoid Smoking, Alcohol, and Hot Liquids

  • Refrain from smoking for 10 days and drinking alcohol for 48 hours post-surgery to promote healthy blood clot formation and prevent complications.
  • Start with cool liquids and advance to a soft food diet, avoiding hot liquids and chewing in the surgical area for the first 24 hours.

Additional Instructions

Leave any hard, sharp areas on the surgical site undisturbed and notify the office staff during your post-operative check-up. If you experience severe nausea or vomiting, consult your doctor. Limit vigorous physical activity for the initial 3 to 4 days post-surgery, then resume as tolerated. If a healing abutment feels loose, contact the office for assistance.

Critical Care and Maintenance of Your Implants and Restorations

Implants serve as artificial teeth and necessitate continuous, stringent maintenance for prolonged success. Here’s how to maintain them:

Daily Maintenance

Maintain excellent oral hygiene using a rotary toothbrush, such as Oral B® Professional Care, at least twice a day. Floss around the implant restoration daily using TePe® Bridge & Implant Floss. Use a Waterpik® Water Flosser with Interdental Brush Heads, filled with a mixture of 50% Listerine® and 50% water, after brushing and flossing. Complete this routine every morning and night to prevent plaque buildup around the implant.

Additionally, swish with a non-alcohol rinse like Listerine Zero before bed to reduce bacteria. Use a Monoject™ syringe if a Waterpik is unavailable for daily flushing around the implant.

Weekly Maintenance

Once a week, devote time to massage the soft tissue surrounding the implants using your fingers. This gentle manipulation aids in flushing out bacteria and minimizing the risk of chronic accumulation, contributing to the overall health and stability of your implants.

Yearly Maintenance

Regular dental check-ups are indispensable for the continued well-being of your implants. Schedule annual appointments with your restorative dentist for comprehensive cleaning, radiographic evaluation, and potential adjustments to the implant system. Vigilantly monitor the condition of the implant restorations for any signs of looseness or instability. Prompt action is imperative in addressing any issues to prevent further complications or implant failure.

By adhering diligently to these maintenance protocols, you can ensure the prolonged success and functionality of your dental implants. Should you experience any unusual symptoms or concerns, promptly contact your healthcare provider for guidance and assistance. Remember to exercise caution when engaging in activities while under the influence of post-surgery medication, and consistently follow the prescribed guidelines for optimal recovery and implant care.

IMPORTANT NOTE

After your implant surgery, remember to strictly follow the post-surgery care instructions to ensure optimal healing and avoid complications. Be especially cautious if you’ve had IV sedation, avoiding driving, consuming alcohol, or making significant decisions for at least 24 hours post-surgery. If you encounter any unusual symptoms or severe discomfort, it’s crucial to contact your doctor immediately.

FAQ

It’s normal to have some bleeding after surgery. Use gauze pads and apply gentle pressure to the area by biting down. Change the gauze as it becomes soaked and continue until the bleeding stops. If bleeding persists for an extended period, contact your surgeon.

You should avoid eating until the numbness has worn off to prevent biting yourself. Start with cool liquids and soft foods for the first 24 hours. Avoid hot liquids and hard, chewy, or sticky foods that might disturb the surgical site.

Apply ice packs to your face in the area of the surgery to help reduce swelling and bruising. Take the pain medication as prescribed by your doctor, preferably after meals to minimize nausea. If swelling or pain persists or worsens, contact your healthcare provider.

Avoid strenuous physical activities for the first 3-4 days post-surgery to prevent increased bleeding or swelling. You can gradually resume normal activities as tolerated after this initial period.

Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first day. Start brushing your teeth gently from day 2, avoiding the incisions. Use a saltwater rinse after meals starting from day 2. If prescribed, use a special mouth rinse according to your surgeon’s instructions.
