Flap and Osseous Surgery
Post-Operative Instructions After Flap and Osseous Surgery
After your flap and osseous surgery, it’s important to take care of yourself properly for optimal healing. Here’s a summary of the post-operative instructions:
Key Steps for Effective Healing After Flap and Osseous Surgery
Activity:
Rest and limit strenuous activity for the rest of the day after leaving the dental office, and avoid aerobic exercise for the next 3 days.
Discomfort:
Expect some discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. Take the prescribed anti-inflammatory medication every 8 hours for the first 3 days to reduce swelling and pain. After that, you can take Tylenol or Advil every 4-6 hours as needed.
Infection:
If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics, continue taking them until they’re finished. Contact your dentist if you notice increasing pain, swelling, or fever after a few days.
Swelling:
Swelling is normal, especially in the lower jaw. Use ice packs wrapped in a cloth on the outside of your face for 20 minutes at a time, alternating sides, for 2-3 hours after surgery. This, along with the anti-inflammatory medication, will help reduce swelling.
Bleeding:
Mild bleeding is common for a few hours after surgery. If it persists, apply a tea bag with gentle pressure for 15-20 minutes. Repeat if necessary, and contact the office if bleeding continues excessively.
Oral Hygiene:
Brush untreated areas normally, but be gentle in operated areas. Avoid flossing in those areas for the first week, and don’t use undiluted mouthwash or water irrigation devices for a month. Use a cotton swab with Peridex for oral hygiene in operated areas.
Eating and Drinking:
Wait until the anesthesia wears off before eating. Stick to high-protein, soft foods for 3-5 days. Avoid spicy, salty, very hot, or very cold foods, as well as nuts or crunchy foods. Also, avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, and carbonated or alcoholic beverages for 48 hours.
Nutritional Supplements:
Consider taking a multivitamin with minerals, calcium, vitamin E, and vitamin C for 4-6 weeks after surgery to aid in healing.
Take one multivitamin with minerals per day.
Take 500mg of calcium twice daily.
Take 400mg of vitamin E.
Take 1000mg of vitamin C once daily.
Removable Dental Appliances:
If you wear a removable appliance over the operated area, minimize its use to avoid putting pressure on the surgical site.
If you have any problems or questions not addressed here, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Please follow these post-surgical care instructions closely to ensure a smooth recovery after your dental procedure. Rest adequately and avoid strenuous activities, including aerobic exercise, for the initial days post-surgery. Manage discomfort with prescribed medications, and use ice packs to alleviate swelling.

FAQ
How should I manage pain after dental surgery?
After dental surgery, manage pain by taking prescribed anti-inflammatory medications every 8 hours for the first three days. After this period, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil every 4-6 hours as needed.
What should I do about swelling after the procedure?
Swelling is a normal response after surgery, particularly in the lower jaw. To reduce swelling, apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, alternating sides, for 2-3 hours post-surgery.
What are the guidelines for eating and drinking after surgery?
Wait until the anesthesia completely wears off before eating. Initially, choose high-protein, soft foods and avoid spicy, salty, or extreme temperature foods, as well as nuts and crunchy items. Refrain from smoking, using a straw, or consuming carbonated or alcoholic beverages for at least 48 hours.
How should I handle oral hygiene post-surgery?
Continue brushing the untreated areas of your mouth as usual but be extra gentle around the operated sites. Avoid flossing these areas for the first week. Instead of using undiluted mouthwash or water irrigation devices, clean the operated areas gently using a cotton swab soaked in Peridex.
What if I experience bleeding after the surgery?
Mild bleeding is common for a few hours following surgery. If bleeding persists, apply a moistened tea bag with gentle pressure to the area for 15-20 minutes. If excessive bleeding continues, repeat the process and contact your dental office if necessary.
